Anxiety Disorders

An anxiety disorder is a mental health condition characterized by excessive, persistent worry, fear, or nervousness that interferes with daily life. While some anxiety is normal, an anxiety disorder causes intense, prolonged distress that can be difficult to control.

Types of Anxiety Disorders

  1. Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) – Chronic, excessive worry about various aspects of life (e.g., work, health, relationships) without a specific cause.

  2. Panic Disorder – Sudden, repeated panic attacks with intense physical symptoms like a racing heart, shortness of breath, or dizziness.

  3. Social Anxiety Disorder – Intense fear of social situations due to fear of embarrassment, judgment, or rejection.

  4. Specific Phobias – Extreme fear of particular objects or situations (e.g., heights, spiders, flying).

  5. Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) – Repetitive, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and behaviors (compulsions) performed to ease anxiety.

  6. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) – Anxiety triggered by a past traumatic event, leading to flashbacks, nightmares, and heightened alertness.

  7. Separation Anxiety Disorder – Extreme fear of being apart from loved ones, common in children but can affect adults.
